Penn State on iTunes U Outage

iTunes U was intermittently unavailable over the past 48. This issue has been resolved and normal access to iTunes U has been restored.

Unscheduled Power Outage: Penn State University Park - Multiple Buildings

A power outage occurred this afternoon in the Bristol Park area. The local power company anticipated that power would be restored by approximately 6:40 PM, this evening. However, commercial power has returned as of 1:00 PM. The buildings affected by the power outage (and where the UPS went onto battery) included ARL West III (Atotech), ARL West IV, Bristol Place I, Greenleaf Park One, and the Torsell Building. The UPS battery in the ARL West III (Atotech) building became exhausted, which resulted in a disruption of phone services until commercial power was restored; approximately 13 minutes. Voice services in the other aforementioned buildings remained operational throughout the power outage.

The CACTUS database was unavailable from 1715-1800, due to the execution of an incorrect command related to Sunday's upgrade. This affected all of the signature stations, the DIMC and other services that depend on the CACTUS database. The database was stopped and then restarted to correct the problem. There was no data loss due to this outage.

Resolved: Circuit Maintenance: Multiple Campuses

We have confirmed the circuit provider has completed their scheduled maintenance this morning. In reviewing the network, the anticipated degradation did not occur. Network services remained fully operational throughout the scheduled maintenance.

Router Hardware Upgrade: Pattee2

On Wednesday, October 7th, 2009, TNS will upgrade from three WS-X6524-100FX-MM modules to two WS-X6148-FE-SFP modules in the Pattee2 router. During this time, there will be a brief outage as networks are moved from the old module into a slot in the new module. This will only affect customers connected to Pattee2 at 100MB. All services will be restored by 7:00am.

The back end storage system had a temporary failure, which is now operational again. We are not sure yet what caused the issue, but will monitor it closely and may need to replace a faulty hardware component.

New ITS Wireless subnet

Starting next week, Monday October 5, 2009, TNS will begin deploying a new IP subnet for wireless VPN and 802.1x authentication. If you are a firewall administrator you may want to add a rule to allow the subnet below into your firewall. Once the new subnet has been added and tested the old subnets will be removed.

9/25/09 Willard2 to Telecom1 link maintenance

On 9/25/09, during the maintenance window, TNS will be performing maintenance on the connection between the Willard2 and Telecom1 routers. During this maintenance, connectivity from the Willard2 router to the Core IB will transition to the redundant connection to the Redundant1 router. Brief disruptions of connectivity may occur as routing converges to and from the redundant link.

All work will be completed by the end of the maintenance window.
