Creating Spam Filters: X-PSU-Spam-Flag
Below are the instructions for configuring a spam filter for
the X-PSU-Spam-Flag header/rule for the most
popular email clients in use here at Penn State. We will add instructions for
additional clients as they become available.

Windows XP
- Start Eudora.
- In the Tools menu, click Filters.
- Click New.
- In the Header box type X-PSU-Spam-Flag.
- In the box right below the Header box, select
Contains.
- Next, type the value YES in the adjacent
box.
- In the Action section, choose Transfer
To.
- Click on the In button that should be to
the right of the Transfer To action.
- Choose Junk from the menu that appears.
- Next, go to File.
- Click on Save.
- Start Mozilla Mail.
- Make a folder called Junk.
- Go to Tools and select Message Filters.
- Click on the New... button.
- In the box that comes up type PSU Filter
( for identification purposes only) in the Filter name
box.
- Under the section For incoming messages that:
make sure that the radio button is on Match
any of the following.
- Click on the scroll down list that says Subject
and choose Customize.
- In the new Customize Headers box that appears,
type X-PSU-Spam-Flag.
- Click the Add button.
- Next, click OK.
- Now in the scroll down list, select the newly added
header.
- Choose Contains on the box to the right.
- Type YES on the last box.
- In the Perform these actions: section, check
the box next to Move to folder:
- Select the Junk folder
- Click on OK.
Note:
This e-mail client does not have the capability
to do header based filtering.
- Start Outlook.
- On the Outlook Tools menu, click Rules
Wizard.
- Click New.
- Click Start from a blank rule and then click
Next.
- Place a check mark in the with specific words in the
message header box.
- In the Rule description area, click specific
words.
- In the Specify words box, type X-PSU-Spam-Flag:
YES
- Click Add
- Now click OK.
- Click Next.
- Place a check mark in the move it to the specified
folder box.
- In the Rule description area, click the word
specified.
- Select the Junk folder if there is already
one.
Note: If there is no Junk
filter, please do the following:
- Click New.
- Under Name type Junk Email
- Click Personal Folders
- Click OK
- Next, click the Junk Email folder you just
created
- Click OK.
- Click Finish
- Click OK .
Mac OS 10.2 and above
- Start Eudora.
- Go to Window and then Filters
.
- Select New .
- In the Header box, type X-PSU-Spam-Flag
.
- In the Contains box, type YES
- Under the first Action box, select Transfer
To
- Under Tranfer To, navigate to Junk.
- Under the second Action box, select Skip
Rest.
