Creating Spam Filters: X-PSU-Spam-Flag

Below are the instructions for configuring a spam filter for the X-PSU-Spam-Flag header/rule for the most popular email clients in use here at Penn State. We will add instructions for additional clients as they become available.

Windows XP
Mac OS 10.2 and Above

Windows XP

Eudora Version 6.x and Higher

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. In the Tools menu, click Filters.
  3. Click New.
  4. In the Header box type X-PSU-Spam-Flag.
  5. In the box right below the Header box, select Contains.
  6. Next, type the value YES in the adjacent box.
  7. In the Action section, choose Transfer To.
  8. Click on the In button that should be to the right of the Transfer To action.
  9. Choose Junk from the menu that appears.
  10. Next, go to File.
  11. Click on Save.

Mozilla 1.7.2

  1. Start Mozilla Mail.
  2. Make a folder called Junk.
  3. Go to Tools and select Message Filters.
  4. Click on the New... button.
  5. In the box that comes up type PSU Filter ( for identification purposes only) in the Filter name box.
  6. Under the section For incoming messages that: make sure that the radio button is on Match any of the following.
  7. Click on the scroll down list that says Subject and choose Customize.
  8. In the new Customize Headers box that appears, type X-PSU-Spam-Flag.
  9. Click the Add button.
  10. Next, click OK.
  11. Now in the scroll down list, select the newly added header.
  12. Choose Contains on the box to the right.
  13. Type YES on the last box.
  14. In the Perform these actions: section, check the box next to Move to folder:
  15. Select the Junk folder
  16. Click on OK.

Outlook Express 6

    Note: This e-mail client does not have the capability to do header based filtering.

Outlook 2002

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Outlook Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.
  3. Click New.
  4. Click Start from a blank rule and then click Next.
  5. Place a check mark in the with specific words in the message header box.
  6. In the Rule description area, click specific words.
  7. In the Specify words box, type X-PSU-Spam-Flag: YES
  8. Click Add
  9. Now click OK.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Place a check mark in the move it to the specified folder box.
  12. In the Rule description area, click the word specified.
  13. Select the Junk folder if there is already one.

    Note: If there is no Junk filter, please do the following:
    • Click New.
    • Under Name type Junk Email
    • Click Personal Folders
    • Click OK
    • Next, click the Junk Email folder you just created
    • Click OK.

  14. Click Finish
  15. Click OK .
   

    Mac OS 10.2 and above

    Eudora Version 6

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. Go to Window and then Filters .
  3. Select New .
  4. In the Header box, type X-PSU-Spam-Flag .
  5. In the Contains box, type YES
  6. Under the first Action box, select Transfer To
  7. Under Tranfer To, navigate to Junk.
  8. Under the second Action box, select Skip Rest.
