Email: Authenticated SMTP for Macintosh

 

Eudora version 6.x for the Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Eudora version 6.x requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

Note: If you are using Kerberos authenication to check mail, authenticated smtp will not work.

  1. While in Eudora, under the Special menu, select Settings.

  2. Click on the Sending Mail icon in the left category list.

  3. Change SMTP Server to: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  4. Make sure Allow Authentication or Allow Authorization is checked.

  5. Click on the SSL icon near the bottom of the left category list.

  6. Make sure that SSL for SMTP is set to Required (TLS).

  7. Make sure that Standard Port SSL Negotiation is set to Maximum Compatibility.

Note: SSL is supported for Mac OS Classic and Mac OS 10.2 or later, but not Mac OS 10.0 or 10.1.

Eudora version 5.1 and 5.2 for the Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Eudora version 5.1 and 5.2 requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Eudora, under the Special menu, select Settings.

  2. Click on the Sending Mail icon in the left category list.

  3. Change SMTP Server to: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  4. Make sure Allow Authentication or Allow Authorization is checked.

  5. Click on the SSL icon near the bottom of the left category list.

  6. Make sure that SSL for SMTP is set to Required (TLS).

  7. An Apple Keychain must exist for Eudora to communicate properly with a server using SSL. To Make sure that a keychain exists on your computer, under the Apple Menu, in Control Panels, select Keychain.

  8. If a System Keychain does not exist, a window asking whether you would like to create a keychain will appear; click on Create and continue to the next step.

    Note: If a different window appears, then a keychain exists that Eudora will use; you can close the window and skip the next step.

  9. A Create Keychain window will appear. Type eudora-SSL in the Keychain Name text-box.

  10. Type a password in the Password and Confirm Password text box. This password can be different than your e-mail account password.

  11. Click Create.

Note: Eudora does not support authenticated SMTP with Mac OS X version 10.0 or 10.1. Eudora 5.2 supports authenticated SMTP on Mac OS X 10.2. Eudora 5.1 and later support authenticated SMTP on Mac 9.x.

Outlook Express 5 and Entourage

On a Macintosh, Microsoft Outlook Express and Entourage both require the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Outlook Express or Entourage, under the Tools menu, select Accounts.

  2. Double-click on the desired account to open the Edit Account window.

  3. For SMTP Server, type: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  4. Click on the Advanced Sending Options button.

  5. Check SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL).

  6. Check SMTP server requires authentication.

  7. Make sure Use same settings as incoming mail server is selected.

  8. Click in the Edit Account window to close the Advanced Options window.

  9. Click OK.

Outlook Express 4.5 for Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Outlook Express 4.5 requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Outlook Express, under the Edit menu, select Preferences.

  2. On the left side, under Accounts, select E-Mail.

  3. Change SMTP Server to: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  4. Click on Advanced.

  5. Make sure that This SMTP service requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.

  6. Click OK on the Advanced window.

  7. Click OK the Preferences window.

Mac OS X Mail Application version 1.2

The Mac OS X Mail Application requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in the Mail application, under the Mail menu, select Preferences.

  2. Double-click on the email account profile that is associated with your Penn State email account.

  3. Next to Outgoing Mail Server, select Add Server... in the drop-down list.

  4. In the window that appears, in the field next to Outgoing Mail Server type: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  5. Make sure that Server port is set to 25.

  6. Check the box next to Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

  7. Click OK on the SMTP Server Options window.

  8. Click OK on the email account window, and close the Accounts window.

Netscape 6 for Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Netscape 6 requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Netscape 6, under the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings.

  2. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left list.

  3. Change Server Name to: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  4. Make sure that Use name and password is checked.

  5. Enter your Penn State Access Account id for the User Name.

  6. Make sure that under Use secure connection (SSL), Always is selected.

  7. Click OK.

Netscape Communicator 4.7 for Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Netscape Communicator 4.7 requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Netscape Communicator, under the Edit menu, select Preferences.

  2. Select Mail Servers which is under Mail & Newsgroups in the left category list.

  3. Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to: authsmtp.psu.edu.

  4. Make sure that Outgoing mail server user name is set to your Penn State Access Account id.

  5. Under Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages select Always (else fail).

  6. Click OK.
