Eudora version 6.x for the Windows
On Windows, Eudora 6.x requires the following changes to
use authenticated SMTP:
Note: If you are using Kerberos authenication to
check mail, authenticated smtp will not work.

While in Eudora, under the Tools menu, select
Options....
-
Select Sending Mail under the category list on
the left side.
-
Change the SMTP Server text box to read:
authsmtp.psu.edu
-
Make sure Allow Authentication is checked.
-
Under Secure Sockets when Sending, make sure
either If available, STARTTLS or Required, STARTTLS is visible in
the drop down window.
Note: Some Eudora 6 users report getting an error
message "Encryption too weak 0 less than 39". We have found that removing
Eudora 6, installing Eudora 5.2, then installing Eudora 6 over Eudora 5.2 fixes
the problem. Eudora 5.2 can be downloaded from

Eudora 5.1 for Windows
On Windows, Eudora 5.1 requires the following changes to
use authenticated SMTP:

Outlook 2002 (XP) for Windows
On Windows, Outlook 2002 (which is included with Office
XP) requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

While in Outlook 2002, under the Tools menu,
select E-Mail Accounts.

Select View or change existing e-mail accounts,
and click Next.
-
Select the email account and click Change.
-
Make sure that Log on using Secure Password
Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.

Change Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) to:
authsmtp.psu.edu.
-
Click on More Settings.
-
Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
-
Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
authentication is checked.
-
Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming
mail server is selected.
-
Click on the Advanced tab.
-
Make sure that Outgoing server (SMTP) is set to
25.
-
Under Outgoing server (SMTP), make sure that
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
-
Click OK on the More Settings window.
-
Click Next.
-
Click Finish on the email account window.

Outlook Express version 5 and 6 and Outlook 2000 for
Windows
On Windows, Outlook Express version 5 or 6 and Outlook
2000 both require the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

While in the mail application, under the Tools
menu, select Accounts.

Select the email account and click on
Properties.
-
Click on the Servers tab.
-
Change Outgoing Mail (SMTP) to:
authsmtp.psu.edu.
-
Make sure that Log on using Secure Password
Authentication is unchecked.

Under Outgoing Mail Server, Make sure that
My server requires authentication is checked.
-
Click on the Settings button.
-
Make sure that Use same settings as my incoming
mail server is selected.
-
Click on the Advanced tab.
-
Make sure that Outgoing Mail (SMTP) is set to
25.
-
Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), make sure that
This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
-
Click OK.

Netscape 6 for Windows
On Windows, Netscape 6 requires the following changes to
use authenticated SMTP:

While in the Netscape 6 Mail application, under the
Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.
-
Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left
side list.
-
Change Server Name to:
authsmtp.psu.edu.
-
Make sure User name and password is checked.
-
Type your Penn State Access Account id in the
User Name field.
-
Set Use secure connection (SSL) to
Always.

Netscape Communicator 4.7 for Windows
On Windows, Netscape Communicator 4.7 requires the
following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

While in Netscape Communicator, under the Edit
menu, select Preferences.

Select Mail Servers which is under Mail
& Newsgroups in the left category list.
-
Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to:
authsmtp.psu.edu.
-
Make sure that Outgoing mail server user name
is set to your Penn State Access Account id.
-
Under Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for
outgoing messages select Always.
