What is SP2?
From the Microsoft web site:
"Microsoft continually works to improve its software. As
part of this effort, we develop updates and fixes to recognized issues and
release them for use by customers. On a regular basis, we combine many of these
fixes into a single package and make the package available for customers to
install on their computers. These packages are called Service Packs.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) will bring users the latest security updates
and innovations from Microsoft. It will establish stronger security settings
that help defend against viruses, hackers, and worms and will provide unique
new security features designed to make it easier for you to protect your PC.
"
Will SP2 affect me?
SP2 only affects users of Windows XP Professional or
Windows XP Home Edition. Previous versions of Windows (such as 2000, ME, 98,
etc.) as well as other operating systems (MAC, Linux, etc.) are not affected by
this service pack.
How can I get SP2?
If you have a fast Internet connection such cable modem,
DSL, or ethernet connection, then the best way for you to obtain SP2 is by
using
Windows
Automatic updates. If you are using a dial-up modem, it make take a very
long time to download SP2 due to its large size. For dial-up modem users,
Microsoft is making SP2 available on CD in September. You will be able to
obtain one of these CDs from either of the ITS Help Desks on the University
Park campus or the computer support center at other locations. ( The SP2 CD
will be available from the same locations as the PAC-ITS CD.)
Are there any problems with SP2?
As with any new software release, there are bound to be
problems with SP2. One of the features of SP2 is a firewall which is
automatically turned on. The firewall may interfere with the normal operation of some programs.
ITS has tested many of the programs frequently used by
students, faculty, and staff. Happily, we did not find many problems. For your convenience we have created pages for problems and
firewall settings that we will continually update as issues arise.
